Our new reality post October 7th:
Despite extensive technological measures and investments,Israel defence mechanisms in the Gaza Strip have failed, much to our dismay. The military, the intelligence units and the border all fell short. Residents had always believed that our border was impervious to infiltration, and while occasional breaches occurred, they were considered manageable. Our reality was complex but tolerable.
After that horrific morning, our collective sense of personal security as a country was damaged, but for the residents of our communities it was destroyed. For many long hours, residents had to hold off hundreds of terrorists, without any assistance from the military or the police.
The Hamas terrorists infiltrated the communities and burned, demolished, and murdered everything in their path. Women, whose husbands fiercely guard the community as members of the civilian rapid response team, held on to the door handle of their panic rooms for dear life. Their crying children, next to them, begging for the shootings and banging on the panic room door to cease. This continued hour after hour after hour. But there was no help in sight…
The profound sense of fear and the unsettling realization that help is nowhere to be found, evoke emotions among the residents that surpass any we have experienced, even in the most tragic events and throughout all of Israel's wars. These atrocities are a haunting reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust, and we deeply mourn the loss of our elderly residents who, having survived the death camps, fell victim to these dreadful terrorist attacks.
